Your Data Is Talking.
Is Your Dealership Listening?

Back in May, I had the pleasure of speaking at the NFDA’s Driving Automotive 2026: Finance Ready, Cyber Smart event – a gathering that brought together some of the sharpest minds in automotive retail to tackle two of the most pressing challenges dealers face today. My session focused on something that underpins both: Data Culture.
Not data strategy. Not data technology. Culture.
Because here’s the uncomfortable truth: most dealerships already have the tools. What’s missing is the attitude.
The Numbers Don’t Lie – But Your Data Might
In my session, I shared a figure that should stop you in your tracks. When we analysed ground-level data capture across service departments in Q1 2026, we found an overall data accuracy rate of 73%. That accounts for missing email addresses, missing mobile numbers, and, critically, vehicles leaving the workshop without their next service or MOT dates being updated. At the worst-performing locations, more than half of the next service due dates were simply absent.
Think about what that means in practice. A customer drives away… they’re in your DMS, but you can’t reach them, you don’t know when they’re due back, and you have no idea whether you’ve lost them to a competitor. The opportunity disappears before it ever surfaces.
And this isn’t new. When I joined the automotive industry in 2001, I arrived from high street retail, where programmes like the Tesco Clubcard and Boots Advantage Card – the latter of which I was involved in launching – were already building sophisticated predictive analytics on the back of rigorously captured customer data.
Twenty-five years ago, accurate data capture was a top priority for major retailers. I sat down in front of Kerridge and was struck by how many fields were blank or out of date. We printed exception reports daily and sent them around the sites in the parts van.
Today, we have dashboards instead of dot matrix printers. But we’re still chasing the same data.
The Hidden Link Between Data Quality and Cyber Risk
Here’s where it gets more serious. Poor data hygiene isn’t just a revenue problem; it’s a security signal.
It’s widely accepted that 95% of cybersecurity breaches are caused by human error: clicking a phishing link, leaving a laptop unlocked, forgetting a bag on a train. These aren’t technology failures. They’re attitude failures.
And the attitude that allows a service advisor to let a car leave without updating the service due date is the same attitude that makes someone think it’s probably fine to click that slightly odd-looking email. If inaccuracy is tolerated in one area, it bleeds into others.
That’s why data quality and cybersecurity are two sides of the same coin. A team that takes data seriously and notices the wrong date or questions the suspiciously generic email address is more likely to pause before clicking a link they shouldn’t.
Can AI Save Us?
There’s a temptation to hand this problem to technology. And yes, automation can do a great deal. We pull millions of dealer records into our hub every night, enriching and enhancing them, filling gaps, and enabling smarter engagement. AI tools are more capable than ever at making the best of what they receive.
But no algorithm will stop someone from clicking a phishing email. No automation will lock the laptop that was left on the desk overnight. Technology is a safety net, not a substitute for the right culture.
Data as a Way of Life
What does a genuine data culture look like in a dealership?
• No tolerance for poor input. The sales exec who enters donald.duck@disney.com shouldn’t be able to move on without challenge.
• Training that tests, not just teaches. Simulated phishing emails. Regular exception reporting. Peer benchmarking so teams know how they compare.
• Leadership that sets the standard. Data accuracy has to be everyone’s job, from the front desk to the boardroom. It can’t be an afterthought.
• Automation as an enhancer, not an excuse. Use the tools to catch what humans miss – but don’t use them as cover for not caring in the first place.
Your customers trust you with their data. They expect it to be recorded accurately, kept securely, and never misused. Meeting that expectation isn’t a compliance box to tick; it’s a competitive advantage and a mark of professionalism.
The dealerships that will thrive are the ones that treat data not as an admin function, but as a way of life.
Your data is talking. It’s time to act.
If you’ve made it this far, there is a high chance you are concerned about the quality of your data, and perhaps also the attitude towards accurate capture within your business.
Our fully automated data cleanse solution cross-references a range of trusted data sources with your database to identify inaccuracies, provide updated information, and enable the detachment of vehicles and customers to facilitate appropriately targeted ongoing communications.
